Building a Capsule Wardrobe: Basics

Earlier I explained the concept behind a capsule wardrobe as having a selection of quality, timeless, versatile, and easy-to-mix articles of clothing. In this post, I’ll share some basics you may want to include in your wardrobe. Basics are simple, functional, and plain pieces that form the foundation of a closet. You can easily mix and match them with other pieces to create different looks. Basics are usually in neutral colors like blaack, white, beige, grey and navy.

Tops:

T-shirt, Oxford or button-down shirt, silk shirt, tank top, solid-colored sweaters

Bottoms:

Fitted jeans, smart pants

Skirts:

Silk mini, midi, or maxi skirt, fitted skirt

Shorts:

High-waisted or mid-rise shorts

Jackets/Coats:

Fitted blazer, linen blazer, plaid/herringbone blazer, trench coat, wool coat

Shoes:

Sandals, flats, sneakers, leather boots, and heels
